We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the Honorable Burton R. Lifland on January 12, 2014. Many of us have practiced before Judge Lifland over the years, during his time as the former chief and bankruptcy judge of the Southern District of New York, and we will remember him as an extremely thoughtful and talented judge.

Howard Seife appeared in many cases before Judge Lifland, including as counsel for the creditors’ committees in the Eddie Bauer/Spiegel and New York Post bankruptcy cases. Howard praised Judge Lifland not only for his demeanor on the bench, but also for his work in cross-border matters. “Judge Lifland was instrumental in the development and implementation of cross-border protocols as well as Chapter 15 of the Bankruptcy Code, and I greatly enjoyed working with him through INSOL International and the International Insolvency Institute. He was very well-regarded within the bankruptcy community, and will be deeply missed.”  We extend our sincerest condolences to his family.
